Down Memory Lane, by John Neville

Recalling my childhood is easy.
At rememb’ring those days I’m a winner,
But I really can’t say what’s happened today;
Or what I’ve just had for my dinner.

How can I remember, when my memory’s so full;
There’s really not room for much more.
But try as I may to remember today what I said,
What I heard, what I saw…?

Sometimes I recall the good times I’ve had
And the wonderful people I’ve met.
I’ve memories of mates and memories of school,
And I’ve memories I’d rather forget!

I’ve been very lucky, many friends that I’ve made
I’m thankful to have had all my life.
When remembering them from past decades
My memory’s as sharp as a knife.

Sometimes I’ll go upstairs for something,
Then find I don’t know why I went.
And reminders I write in my diary?
I haven’t a clue what they meant.

I’ll occasionally see a familiar face,
But their name slips completely away!
My mind just goes blank and I’m standing bemused,
With no idea what I wanted to say.

Memory Lane is a long lane;
And I know I’m close to the end.
But recalling the journey gets harder, and
It’s driving me right round the bend.
