Recorded Music Society: Summer Music

The last meeting before our summer break was hosted by Bob. He produced a thoughtful, polished, witty and erudite programme with an eclectic mix of music.

We were treated to a melodic evening beginning with music from Beethoven Pastoral and Number 8 Symphonies and then 2 pieces from ‘Phantom of the Opera: ’Music of the Night’ and ‘All I ask of You’.

Bob next moved on to make an interesting comparison between 2 excerpts from ‘Romeo and Juliet’: first a delightful Tchaikovsky composition followed by a spiky Prokofiev. The first half culminuted in 2 Strauss pieces, in particular the rousing Radetzki March accompanied by traditional thunderous clapping.

There is a prize for those of you who know who or what Radetzki was! After a liquid interval the programme included Mendelssohn ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Mozart ‘Clarinet Concerto’, Massanet ‘Meditation’, Delius ‘On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring’ (how many have you heard this Spring?), plus 2 Frank Sinatra tracks: ‘You make me feel so young’ and ‘Chicago’. The evening was rounded off in stimulating style by Souza ‘Liberty Bell’.

Thank you Bob.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st October.
