Today We Remember

Joseph Edward WILLIAMS
Service no. 740269

Private, 26th Battalion, Canadian Infantry
(New Brunswick Regiment).
5th Brigade, 2nd Division.

Joseph was killed in action on 15 August 1917 near Lens, fighting in the Canadian Army against the Germans. He was 20 years old.

Family Background

Joseph was the son of Frederick Williams of Aynho and the late Ann E Williams, who was born in Radstone on the other side of Brackley.

Joseph had at least seven siblings; his father, Fred, and his eldest sibling are shown on the census as farm labourers.  It is thought Joseph emigrated to Canada and gained Canadian citizenship. Paul Gross’ film “Passchendaele” (2008) perhaps covers best the enormous effort and sacrifice that Canada made in the Great War – well worth re-watching!.

Joseph is remembered in Canadian Cemetery No. 3 Memorial 49 of Loos British Cemetery.
