Aynho Long Walk: 24th July 2014

A lovely warm sunny day for today’s walk and eleven walkers of whom all but three are Aynho residents. We set off down Green Lane and were pleased to see that the lower end has now been resurfaced, with the deeply entrenched wheel ruts filled. We passed through the yard and across the stream and climbed through the ripe wheat fields to the copse at the top of the ridge. In the next field, which was being harvested, we saw, high above the ridge, two young kites circling together. The path leads diagonally down the field being harvested before crossing into the next wheat field and leading diagonally up to the high point of the ridge. From here it weaves through wheat fields to the edge of Charlton. We crossed into the old stone pits and followed the path with the electrified fence on our right. In the final field before the village a large herd of cows suddenly rushed the length of the field, crossed in front of us, and charged into the next field.

Charlton was looking attractive in the sunshine as we walked through the village and down to the stream. As we took the path up towards Rainsborough Camp we were confronted by another herd of cows. This time they did not charge off but stood blocking our way from the moment we came through the gate. We formed a tight group and moved towards them causing them to retreat and make way for us. Fortunately they did not follow us and we had soon passed the Camp and followed the ridge to Green Lane and back to the pavilion for very welcome refreshment. 5.9miles.
